East meets West in this most popular of all the famous Rogers and Hammerstein musicals.  Siam in 1860 is the setting as a widowed Anna is hired to teach English to the King's son.  She finds the King to be a difficult man, whose pride and position makes him hide his kind inner self.  He, in turn, finds her radical and progressive ideas are offensive to this belief in absolute power.  Gradually, his respect for her wisdom and a grudging admiration for her courage start to soften the King's heart.  It may be too late for him to change, but Anna's star pupil is his son.  The show won five Tony awards on Broadway, including Best Musical of 1951.  The King and I is famous for its glorious choreography, beautiful period costumes and its lyrical score, which includes hit songs - "Getting to Know You" and "Shall We Dance".
