President: Dora Bryan O.B.E. M.A.
Dora is one of Britain’s most versatile stars having appeared in Concert, Theatre, Pantomime, Musical Comedy, Cabaret and on Record.
Born in Parbold, Lancashire, brought up in Oldham, Dora starred as a babe in Pantomime at the age of 12 at the Palace Theatre, Manchester.
On leaving school at 14 she joined a local repertory theatre in Oldham and left at 20 as the leading lady. She then went overseas with ENSA, followed by more provincial rep at Peterborough, Westcliff and Colchester, and toured for six months in Noel Coward’s “PRIVATE LIVES”.
Her first appearance in London was in “STAGE DOOR”, followed by “NO ROOM AT THE INN”, Noel Coward’s “PEACE IN OUR TIME”, Emlyn Williams “ACCOLADE”, “TRAVELLERS JOY” with Yvonne Arnaud, “THE LYRIC REVIEW”, “THE GLOBE REVIEW”, “LIVING FOR PLEASURE”, and “THE LOVEBIRDS”.
Musicals at London’s top theatres include “THE WATER GYPSIES” at the Wintergarden”GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES” at the Princes Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. She was the first woman to play ‘DAME’ in Pantomime at the London Palladium.
In addition she has made numerous films including “ODD MAN OUT”, “FALLEN IDOL”, “THE CURE FOR LOVE”, “THE BLUE LAMP”, “NO HIGHWAY”, “COCKLESHELL HEROES”, “THE GREAT ST. TRINIANS TRAIN ROBBERY”, and she won the British Academy Award for “A TASTE OF HONEY”.
Dora has made many show LPs and records and even got into the top 20 with “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A BEATLE”. She has appeared in her own one-woman show at the Hong Kong festival. Her other credits include Mrs Warren in “MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION”, “RELATIVELY SPEAKING” in England and Canada, Miss Marple in “A MURDER HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED”, “THE CURE FOR LOVE”, the film version of she she appeared in 30 years ago, and “GYPSY” the Musical.
Dora was awarded the O.B.E. in Her Majesty’s Birthday Honours list in 1996 and received her award at Buckingham Palace in July 1996.
